In need of a root canal? Don’t fret, millions of people are treated yearly for root canal surgery. Root canal surgery is one type of endodontic treatment. “Endo” is greek for “inside”, and “odont” meaning “tooth”, the literal translation being “inside tooth” treatment.

In order to better understand the surgery, it’s important to understand the anatomy of the tooth. The white layer showing on your tooth is the tooth enamel, below this is a hard layer called the dentin. Within the dentin is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains the blood vessels and nerves within the tooth, it creates the surrounding hard tissues which protect the tooth during development. Once the tooth is fully mature it can survive without this pulp.

When this pulp becomes inflamed or infected is when you’ll need root canal surgery. The infected pulp will be removed from the tooth and the remaining space will be filled. Thus saving the tooth from further infection. Once surgery is completed you should experience pain free living within a few days!
